From 1st October 2026, applicable foreign visitors entering Mainland Tanzania will be required to hold valid Inbound Travel Insurance under the Insurance (Inbound Travel Insurance) Regulations, 2026 – Government Notice No. 256. The requirement applies to entry through airports, seaports and land borders.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
Standard Adult Premium: USD 44 equivalent in TZS. Validity: Up to 92 days, including multiple entries. Purchase: Online before travel or upon arrival. Cover: Emergency medical treatment, medical evacuation, repatriation and loss of luggage. Infants 0–2: Free. Children 3–17: 50% discount. Groups of 10+: Adults receive 10% discount.
WHO IS EXEMPTED?
Current NIC guidance lists Tanzanian residents, valid work/residential permit holders, diaspora, diplomats, transit passengers, and residents of EAC or SADC Partner States as exempted.
WHICH INSURANCE SHOULD YOU APPLY FOR, MAINLAND TANZANIA (NIC) OR ZANZIBAR (ZIC)?
If arriving Mainland Tanzania first → Applicable visitors should obtain NIC Inbound Travel Insurance. Visitors travelling to Zanzibar next do not require purchasing the Zanzibar (ZIC) Insurance. Please keep a copy of the NIC insurance certificate available for verification.
If arriving Zanzibar first → Guests who have already obtained valid ZIC Inbound Travel Insurance do not need to purchase the NIC Mainland insurance again. Please keep a copy of the ZIC insurance certificate available for verification.
WHAT SHOULD TOUR OPERATORS DO?
Please inform guests in advance and encourage them to complete their insurance before travelling to avoid delays on arrival.
